it was a fun learning journey for the 104 participants who
joined the CSC walk @ Bukit Brown Cemetery.

It was 16 May 2014, Friday and the sun was out. Keeping their water bottles within reach, the participants
readied themselves for a tour around Bukit Brown Cemetery. Many had their cameras slung over their
shoulders too. Amongst those in attendance were staff from Ministry of Education (MOE) Headquarters,
who took an afternoon off to embark on a leisure yet eye-opening walk.
Sports & Recreation Off cer Jason Ng said, This was a unique activity for MOE staff as we usually chose
places such as MacRitchie Reservoir Park and Labrador Nature Reserve for our events. It was also an
ideal place for us as the cemetery is located in the town area. Most cemeteries are located in areas
such as Yio Chu Kang or Choa Chu Kang, he added, making accessibility an issue.

The cemetery is a resting ground for 100,000 pioneers who lived through different historical periods.
Many well-known community, political and business leaders are buried here too. The walking track
spans 4.2 kilometres and participants enjoyed the quietude and greenery. Bukit Brown cemetery is also
home to rare fauna, forest birds and several wild animals. Jason said the premises can be a little spooky
if one visited it alone but as they were in a big group no one had the jitters.

The participants went home a little tanned and with a few mosquito bites but all in all they had
a great time.
