Maintaining clear, healthy skin can be a challenge in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. With urban stressors, pollution and busy schedules added to the mix, your skin faces a daily battle. From clogged pores to dryness caused by air-conditioning, it’s easy to see why a dedicated skincare routine is essential.
According to Ms Christina Lim, Vice President of Group Training and Product Development at The Ultimate Spa located at CSC @ Bukit Batok and 111 Somerset, there’s no shortcut to healthy skin. “Without proper care, the skin can’t breathe well, which may result in various skin problems,” she shares.
Cleanse, moisturise and protect
A proper daily skincare routine forms the foundation of healthy skin. Ms Lim emphasises the importance of cleansing, moisturising and protecting your skin to combat common issues like breakouts and premature ageing.
Cleanse thoroughly
Begin your day with a double cleanse — start with an oil-based cleanser to remove sweat, makeup, and pollutants, followed by a gentle face wash. “Use lukewarm water as hot water can strip natural oils, while cold water may not cleanse effectively,” says Ms Lim. “Use your fingertips and massage the cleanser in gentle circular motions for 30 seconds, focusing on areas prone to build-up like the nose, chin and forehead. Avoid scrubbing or using rough tools, which may irritate skin.”
For oily or acne-prone skin, foaming or gel cleansers work best, while those with dry or sensitive skin should opt for non-stripping cleansers.
Moisturise for hydration
A lightweight moisturiser helps maintain hydration and strengthens your skin barrier. “Apply in upward circular motions, and don’t forget your neck,” says Ms Lim. “Be gentle around the eyes and use a light-textured eye cream on your ring finger to avoid tugging delicate skin.”
Always use sunscreen
No skincare routine is complete without sunscreen. Ms Lim recommends using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. “Reapply your sunscreen every two hours, especially if sweating or exposed to water,” she advises. Sunscreen protects against UV damage, hyperpigmentation and skin cancer, making it non-negotiable.
Lifestyle matters
Great skin isn’t just about what you put on your face — it’s also about your lifestyle. Ms Lim advocates for a holistic approach to skincare, focusing on diet, hydration, sleep and stress management.
Eat smart
Include foods high in healthy fats, like salmon, walnuts and flaxseeds, and fruits rich in antioxidants, such as cranberries, guavas and strawberries. “Smoking, excessive sugar and processed foods are no-nos as they can lead to premature ageing or worsen acne,” she notes.
Stay hydrated and rested
Drinking 2 to 3 litres of water daily and sleeping at least seven hours a night are essential for skin health. Proper hydration improves skin elasticity, while sufficient sleep allows your skin to repair and regenerate.
Manage stress
Chronic stress can lead to hormonal imbalances, triggering breakouts or dullness. Regular exercise, meditation and personal hygiene habits can help maintain balance. “A holistic approach focuses on prevention,” Ms Lim explains. “It’s about exercising, maintaining gut health and practicing regular skincare habits.”
Spa treatments for skin rejuvenation
Sometimes, your skin needs more than just a daily routine. Professional treatments at a spa can provide deeper care and address stubborn issues like blackheads or dullness.
“Spas can deep cleanse your pores more thoroughly than most home treatments,” says Ms Lim. Techniques like microdermabrasion and chemical peels remove dead skin cells and promote a radiant complexion.
At The Ultimate Spa, award-winning treatments cater to various skin needs. The 24K Gold Deluxe treatment, for example, combines gold and silk to firm skin, smooth wrinkles and add radiance. “It’s not suitable for oily skin, but it’s luxurious and effective for anti-ageing,” she shares.
Other offerings include the Collagen 2 Repair, which uses marine collagen and edelweiss stem cells, and Luminance Pear, an antioxidant-rich treatment for discoloration and redness.
Everyone needs skincare
Skincare isn’t just for women or the young. Ms Lim highlights the growing interest in male grooming and the importance of hydration for men and older adults. “Skin concerns like acne, razor bumps or premature wrinkles can affect confidence in men,” says Ms Lim. A simple routine of cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen can improve texture and reduce irritation from shaving.
For older adults, ageing and menopause can lead to thinner, drier skin. Ms Lim recommends intensive hydrating products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and collagen-boosting formulas. “Consider retinol alternatives, like bakuchiol, if your skin is sensitive,” she suggests. Treatments using microcurrent, radiofrequency and Cellec (a light therapy device) can also help with sagging and rejuvenation.
But no matter your age, it’s important to remember two things: Always use sunscreen, and always assess your skin regularly. “What works in your 40s may not work in your 50s,” says Ms Lim.
Ms Lim’s final piece of advice? Stick to a routine. “Effective skincare is all about consistency and using the right products. By committing to a regular beauty regimen, you can achieve and maintain radiant, healthy skin. Consistency truly makes all the difference!”
Your first spa treatment: a checklist
Make the most of your first session with these tips from Ms Christina Lim.
1. Know your skin
Understand your skin type — oily, dry, combination, or sensitive — and identify any concerns such as acne, dryness, or pigmentation. Unsure? Book a consultation at a reputable spa to assess your skin.
2. Do your homework
Research spas with strong reviews and certified professionals, especially if advanced treatments are involved.
3. Communicate with your aesthetician
“Discuss your skincare routine, allergies, sensitivities or recent treatments like laser therapy or retinoid use,” advises Ms Lim. “Be clear about your expectations, ask for costs upfront and request a treatment schedule.”
4. Pause active ingredients
Avoid using strong actives like retinol, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) and exfoliating scrubs for at least 48 hours before your appointment to reduce the risk of irritation.
5. Plan for recovery
Some treatments may leave your skin red or sensitive for a day or two. Follow post-treatment care instructions carefully and avoid harsh products while your skin heals.
6. Stay consistent, not excessive
Support your treatments with a regular at-home skincare routine. Space out spa appointments to allow your skin time to recover and reap the full benefits.
